Urban Area Security Initiative

The Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) is a Department of Homeland Security program that enhances regional preparedness in major metropolitan areas. It assists participating jurisdictions in developing integrated regional systems for prevention, protection, response, and recovery. The New Orleans UASI Region is comprised of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parishes. Each parish is represented by its Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, in addition to the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port and U.S. District Attorney. Since 2003 the region has received over $30M in federal grant funds that have been used to train and equip first responders, build an interoperable communications system, and develop other capabilities like the Urban Search and Rescue Team.
